Acne
Apart from skin cancer, acne is one of the most common conditions treated at The Skin Centre. We are passionate about clearing your skin and seeing you face the world with confidence.
Acne can take several forms depending on your age, skin type and whether you have any other medical conditions. In order to get the best results, it is important to tailor the approach that is optimal to your particular pattern of acne.
Skin Type
In dark skin we not only have to control and clear acne but it is often necessary to clear prominent hyperpigmentation (dark marks) that results. We had have tremendous results with this (insert before/afters)
In fair skin, we usually find that rather that dark spots developing, there is much more prominent inflammation. Fortunately there are very effective options for this pattern of acne as well. (Before/after)
Age
Although most people associate acne with the teenage years, a growing number of women have acne into their 30’s and beyond. The reason for this is not known but there is evidence that changes in dietary patterns may play a role. The pattern of acne seen in the teenage years is different and requires a different approach to mature acne, but there are many options for clearing the skin at all ages.
Other Medical Conditions
Many patients who may not have experienced acne in their teenage years may suddenly experience an acne flare after a stressful event or after surgery. We understand how distressing this can be if you have had clear skin all your life and suddenly you are faced with acne on top of life’s other challenges. Don’t despair. Your acne flare can be addressed and chances are - once the stressful event has passed, you may not need further treatment to maintain your clear skin.
On the other hand, there are some well known medical conditions which increase your chances of having stubborn acne. One common cause polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) which can also cause weight gain, excessive hair growth on the face and body, hair loss from the scalp and even elevated blood sugar and triglycerides. We can certainly address the skin and hair concerns, suggest appropriate supplements (link out to Luminnova Health) and collaborate with your other doctors to optimize your health.
Increasingly, we are observing acne patterns similar to PCOS in many patients in the Bahamas, including teenagers. I believe that these are the signs of early metabolic syndrome related to our diet which is high in sugars and refined carbohydrates. While we can address your acne even without changes in your diet, your skin will clear faster, have a better response and fewer flare ups if you can make the necessary changes in your diet and lifestyle. These will lessen your risk of several more threatening diseases in the future - a win-win situation!!
Acne Solutions
In the majority of cases acne can be completely cleared with topical medications. That is, medications applied to the skin. In some cases we may recommend oral antibiotics or very RARELY a strong medication called Accutane. I generally avoid oral treatments if possible, as these can have side effects, particularly Accutane.
We offer a number of other treatments to speed up your response or give longer lasting control including high powered laser, gentle therapeutic laser and photodynamic therapy.
In addition to controlling and clearing acne, many patients are concerned by the dark spots that result, excessive oiliness, and in some cases, true scarring. We can effectively address all of these issues and help you to regain your clear, beautiful skin!
Of these challenges, acne scarring is the most challenging to address. The aim is to control acne adequately to prevent scarring. However, we do offer procedures to improved established scarring including our powerful fractional RF platform and Our Neo Acne Clear laser.
Exciting New Developments
We have recently introduced a special formulation of topical phytonutrients (plant based nutrients) at The Skin Centre. Many research studies have confirmed the beneficial action of these phytonutrients in several skin disorders and medical conditions. It is particularly helpful in acne as it helps to reduce inflammation, oiliness and inhibits and reduces scarring!
